"Was HIV developed as a population control agent?"

A popular conspiracy theory claims that HIV was developed in US military labs as a biological weapon and spread through vaccines and infected needles. The diabolical plan was to massively decimate the black population and gain control over it, especially in Africa. Another rumour, which also became widespread there, asserts that AIDS is just a hoax and that precautions are unnecessary, ineffective, or harmful.
Both theories are now clearly regarded as fake news – with tragic consequences. They contributed to an increase in infections and deaths, the stigmatization of AIDS patients, and widespread distrust of Western institutions and their medicine.
