Bohemian Club

Founded in 1872, the Bohemian Club is one of the most exclu- sive clubs in the world. Membership is coveted by the wealthy American elite, especially since the club acquired a wooded area called Bohemian Grove near San Francisco. Since then, the grove has been the venue for an annual gathering of around 2000 male leaders from business, politics and the media. The two-week retreat offers stressed men a ‚safe space‘ to switch off and relax. The time out is sweetened with a little adventure romance. Part of the entertainment program is the traditional ceremony at the owl shrine known as the ‘cremation of care.’ Contrary to sensational claims, no human sacrifices occur; instead, it symbolizes the sym- bolic burning away of worries. While it may seem a bit peculiar, it is relatively harmless in comparison.
