Cyber-terrorism

Digitization is making its way into all areas of life, interconnecting everyday items over the internet – from smartphones and coffee machines to building systems, industrial plants, and financial transactions. However, the comprehensive digital networking, known as the Internet of Things, also renders smart devices more vulnerable to sabotage. Consequently, conspiracy theorists fear an increase in cyberattacks on critical infrastructures such as energy supply, water distribution, and transportation systems, potentially heralding the end of civilization. Experts, however, emphasize that measures to protect against cybercrime are constantly being improved as well. Thus, such doomsday scenarios currently appear rather implausible.
